Technology assignment #2 : How technology works

What is a CD?

A CD stands for Compact Disc and is used to store digital data but, it was originally made for storing digital audio. It is a small optical disc where we can put in text, images and music. The CD was first available on the market in the late 1982 but we still use it now in the year of 2007.

Where would you find this technology?

You can find a music CD in stores in the mall, but if you want an empty one, you can go to any electronic stores (to download your own documents, pictures, or songs).

Size and Capacity

Standard sized CDs have a diameter of 120mm and can hold about 80 minutes of audio. Some other discs with a diameter of 80mm (usually used for CD singles) hold about 20 minutes of audio. The CD was extremely successful by the year of 2004 that the annual worldwide sales of CD-Audio, CD-ROM, and CD-R reached approximately 30 billion discs!

When was the CD developed?

The CD was invented by James Russell in the year of 1965. It was then developed by the companies Sony and Philips in the year of 1979. The CD gained popularity replacing vinyl records.

How does it work?

The way for the digital information to be transferred to the opitical disk is by using a special master opitical disk that has a light-sensitive base layer that is exposed to the light from a laser while the disk spins. To read informations from a compact disc, CD players use a low-intesity laser scanner which reflects light off the surface of the disc.

Do you personally own a device with this technology?

Yes, I do personally own a CD and usually put pictures or even sometimes songs. Most of the time, I put pictures in the CD but rarely put any songs. The reason for that is because now, there is an improved form of a CD. We can now use the DVD because it has a bigger capacity. I also own a lot of music CD that we get to buy in stores.

Do you feel this technology will still be used in 10 years from now or be replaced with something better?

From my opinion, I think this technology will still be used in 10 years from now because the CD was invented 20 years ago and we still use it now. Even though we might still use the CD, there is a chance that the amount of people using it will decrease because we can now use the DVD. The DVD has a bigger capacity compared to the CD and is a better version so people might start using it rather than the CD. There has already been an improved form of the CD invented which is the DVD and maybe, in the next few years, there will be a more advanced one.

Technology in Education – Assignment #1

Question #1 – How is technology used in education? (overall)

The way that technology is used in education is it is where we can get our information. We can use it as a source. For example, using the internet to find what we need, use the online encyclopedia or even encarta. Searching for online news can only be usefull in education.

Question #2 - How do you personally use technology in aiding your learning at NJIS (during school, homework, etc)?

The way I use technology personally in aiding my learning at NJIS is to use the internet as one of the source for my assignment. When I need to research about a topic, I usually either use the internet, or use Encarta. To find recent news, I also usually use the internet as my source.

Question #3 – Does technology improve your education or create more complexity (therefore becoming a negative aspect)?

From my opinion, I think technology improves my education. There are some times when we search for something in the net, it doesn’t exactly turn out as the way you expected but it does become an advantage using the net. Technology improves my education by giving me the information I need. (Internet search or Encyclopedia)
